General Questions

What is pediatric occupational therapy?
What ages do you work with?

Pediatric occupational therapy helps children build the skills they need to participate more fully and confidently in everyday activities, including play, self-care, school routines, and social interactions. OT supports areas such as sensory processing, emotional regulation, fine motor skills, coordination, and independence.

Lavender Lane Occupational Therapy supports children from birth through young adulthood (age 21), with therapy individualized to each child’s unique strengths, needs, and developmental journey.

What concerns can occupational therapy help with?
Does my child need a diagnosis to receive OT?

Occupational therapy may support children experiencing challenges with:

• Sensory processing and regulation

• Emotional regulation and coping skills

• Fine motor skills and handwriting

• Gross motor coordination and strength

• Motor planning and body awareness

• Self-care skills (dressing, feeding, grooming, toileting, etc)

• Play skills and participation

• Attention, flexibility, and transitions

• Confidence and independence in daily activities

No. Children do not need a formal diagnosis to benefit from occupational therapy. OT can support children who are experiencing challenges participating in everyday activities, regardless of whether they have a medical, developmental, or educational diagnosis. However, a referral from the pediatrician is needed to initiate evaluation and services. A referral form will be provided after our consultation call.

What does a typical therapy session look like?
What does “play-based therapy” mean?

Each session looks different because every child is unique! 45 minute sessions may include movement, sensory exploration, games, crafts, pretend play, problem-solving, and activities that support a child’s individual goals—all while keeping therapy engaging and meaningful.

Play is how children naturally learn and make sense of the world. Play-based therapy uses activities that are motivating and meaningful to each child to build skills while supporting confidence, connection, and engagement.

Logistics & Participation

Do parents/caregivers participate in therapy sessions?
Where are services provided?

Caregiver involvement is an important part of therapy. When appropriate, caregivers are included through observation, collaboration, and coaching so strategies can be incorporated into everyday routines and activities.

Lavender Lane Occupational Therapy provides services from a welcoming home-based office in New Fairfield, Connecticut, as well as in-home therapy services throughout Northern Fairfield County and Lower New Haven County.

Do you accept insurance?
What payment methods do you accept?

Lavender Lane Occupational Therapy is an out-of-network provider. Families may request a superbill to submit to their insurance company for possible reimbursement, depending on their individual plan benefits.

We accept HSA and FSA cards, as well as all major credit and debit cards. We can also accept cash and checks. Credit cards and HSA/FSA payments are processed through the patient portal, and payment is typically collected at the time of service.

We request at least 24 hours’ notice for any session cancellations or rescheduling whenever possible, so that we can offer the time to another family. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice are subject to the full session fee.

What is your cancellation policy?
How do we get started?

The journey begins with a free initial consultation to learn more about your child and family’s needs. From there, we’ll discuss next steps, which may include an evaluation and development of an individualized therapy plan.
